Job Vacancy: Head of Library
Location: Lagos
Purpose of Position
- To supervise and manage the school library to ensure we attain world class standard in all ramifications.
Responsibilities of a Head of Library:
They include but not limited to the following:
- Develop strategy for acquisition of library resources and enable users optimize the utilization of available services.
- Develops and presents organized training programs and other formal instructional programs designed to teach library research skills and to assist patrons in the more effective use of the library’s collections, with responsibility to determine need, develop appropriate materials and format and evaluate effectiveness.
- Researches and creates bibliographies, research guides, annotated reference lists and other bibliographic aids and instructional materials designed to assist patrons in a topic area or academic discipline, requiring the ability to assess need, develop appropriate materials in proper format and an understanding of subject matter.
- Instructs patrons in use of various complex indexes, guides and other bibliographic and reference tools, which may include use of a computerized system, requiring the ability to access information needs of patrons and knowledge of the authority, scope, treatment, arrangement and format of the full range of library and reference tools, and an ability to explain and interpret the use of such tools.
- Analyzes various bibliographic request forms, requiring an understanding of standard patron request and knowledge of standard bibliographic tools used to verify accuracy and completeness of information provided by patron.
- Ensures the adoption of world class standard in the use of bibliographic and reference methods and/or cataloging and classification procedures, requiring a basic understanding of library principles and theory.
- Operates and/or trains staff in the use of library system(s), requiring a thorough knowledge of the organization of bibliographic data contained on the system as well as an ability to query the system to retrieve all relevant data.
- Supervises the maintenance of departmental files, records, and statistics.
- Negotiates standing order, blanket and approval order arrangements.
- Prepares budget requests for a departmental service, with responsibility to monitor and/or authorize expenditures within approved budget limits and keep accurate fiscal records.
- Maintains awareness of current developments in subject field, applicable technology and/or constantly changing meaning, interpretation and application of complex rules and standards governing the organization and classification of materials
- Participates in various library, University and professional committees and activities.
- Assesses researches and selects appropriate library material to support the academic programs, reviewing and evaluating for need, cost and availability, requiring knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the library’s collection.
- Initiates and maintains business relationships with publishers, book and database vendors, both foreign and domestic, to negotiate price and discounts, and makes purchasing arrangements and follows up to resolve problems; cancels orders as needed.
- Monitors compliance with copyright requirements, requiring a general understanding of and ability to explain such requirements to users.
- Evaluates cataloging records supplied by branch libraries to verify conformance to world class acceptable standards and adapts or revises records as needed, with ultimate responsibility for the quality and accuracy of cataloging records.
- Supervise and assign duties to direct reports, conduct performance appraisals, recommend trainings and career development options.
- Generate management periodic report on the use and management of the library services to inform decisions.
- Any other duty specific or adhoc to be assigned by line manager from time to time.

Qualifications:
- Minimum of First Degree in Library or Information Science. (M.Sc. is an added advantage)
- Professional Qualification: Membership of relevant professional library / information science bodies is a must.
Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years work experience in an academic library.
